Although Miami Beach has a reputation for being the ultimate adult playground, don’t let that deter you from bringing your family to this beautiful coastal city. Most of the partying only comes out far after you and your family are in bed, so it’s something you most likely won’t have to deal with. That said, Miami Beach has plenty of entertainment options and attractions ideal for a stellar family vacation. If you’re planning a family vacation here, make sure to add these places to your itinerary.
Zoo Miami
Located 30 minutes south of Miami Beach, Zoo Miami is one of the top-rated zoos in the country and the oldest and largest zoo in Florida, showcasing over 3,000 animals from around the world over 750 acres. The unique climate of Miami allows the zoo to keep some rarer species in open-air exhibits to replicate the animals’ natural habitat. In total, the zoo has 100 exhibits along a 3-mile loop, making it easy for all ages and fitness levels to enjoy the park.
The five sections of the zoo include the Everglades, Asia, Africa, Amazon and Beyond, and Australia, giving your family a chance to see tigers, elephants, snakes, alligators, and kangaroos in just one visit. With all there is to see, the zoo is a no-brainer for Miami Beach’s top things to do. Admission is $22.95 for ages 13 and up and $18.95 for children ages 3 to 12. The zoo is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
Hit the Beach
With roughly 4 miles of coastline, Miami Beach is a superb place to grab the family and hit the sand. The only trouble is that some of Miami Beach’s most famous beaches are a bit racy for some families. However, there are still plenty of family-friendly beaches in and around the city that avoid excessive partying or nude bathing areas.
Just 15 miles south of Miami Beach, Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park is the quintessential spot for families. For just $8, you gain access to the park, which includes miles of pristine beaches and million-dollar views without the excessive development you’ll find in more urbanized parts of Miami. The 95-foot tall Cape Florida Lighthouse is worth the visit, providing scenic, 360-degree views of the surrounding beach and park. While the park has two restaurants on site, bring your own food and use the free picnic shelters for some cooking fun with the entire family.
La Perrada De Edgar
Featured on “The Layover” with Anthony Bourdain, La Perrada De Edgar is a Colombian-American hot dog restaurant that’s a must-visit for adults and kids. Every kid appreciates a delicious hot dog, and at La Perrada, they won’t be disappointed. With dozens of dogs inspired from ingredients from around the world, you can get yours as tame or as exotic as you’d like. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, go for the Edgar Special Dog. Topped with mozzarella, pineapple, blackberries, plums, and whipped cream, this dog is a taste unlike any other.
From whipped cream hot dogs to animals from around the globe, Miami Beach has all the attractions to make your next family outing one you’ll remember for a lifetime.
