Travelling can often be expensive, especially if you like to take part in more alternative activities, but we don’t think that your budget should stop you from enjoying your holiday. That’s why we’ve created a list of 8 adventures in Illinois that won’t break the bank.
1. Stand on the ledge
If you’re a bit of a thrill seeker, then head to the Chicago Skydeck to stand on their enclosed glass ledge and look down at the city below… 1,353 feet below that is! It costs just $20 and you’ll have the best photos of the skyline.
2. Visit Superman’s hometown
Comic book fans will love to visit Metropolis, Illinois, where Superman grew up. There’s also a Superman Museum that contains over 20,000 pieces of memorabilia and cost just $5 to enter.
3. Zoom across a zip line
For those of you who like to feel the wind in your hair and your heart in your throat, you can soar through the treetops of Grafton in a harness. The base price does exceed $50, but there are group discounts and other special offers available on a regular basis.
4. Ride in a Water Taxi
Looking for an alternative mode of transport in Chicago? Choose the water taxi. It’ll get you from Point A to Point B and give you a unique view. An all-day pass costs just $9 for unlimited rides.
5. Go Camping
There’s nothing like the great outdoors, so why not pack your tent and spend a night under the stars? Places like Moraine Hills State Park and the Chicago Park District charge $50 per night to camp and often have free activities, like cookouts and movie screenings.
6. Go scuba diving
In Mermet Springs, scuba divers can explore an underwater playground, featuring a sunken Boeing 727 and a petting zoo, that will amaze even the most adventurous people. Prices start from $25.
7. Tour a Chicago Firehouse
If you have kids – or even if you don’t – take a free tour of Chicago’s firehouses. You can pose for selfies with firefighters, pretend to drive the firetrucks, and learn about how the brave men and women of Illinois fight fires. Warning: They don’t let civilians use the firepole.
8. Explore the natural world
If you like to hike or bike, then explore some of the breathtaking nature trails and reserves in the Prairie State, including Piney Creek Ravine, Northerly Island, and Garden of the Gods. You’ll get fresh air, good exercise, and you might even spot some wild animals.
If your wanderlust has been triggered by these incredible activities, then here are a few things you should know before visiting Illinois.
- You’ll need an ESTA visa to travel to the US. You can get one of these quickly and easily through www.application-esta.co.uk.
- If you’re planning to take part in any extreme sports or activities where you could get hurt, then you’ll often need specialised medical insurance, so book this before you go.
- Illinois has a very varied climate, from heatwaves to snowstorms depending on when and where you go. Look up the forecast and pack accordingly.
