Moroccan Hammam
You will find a true Moroccan steam room at Riad & Spa Marrakesh Shanima not to be confused with a Turkish or European steam room.
There’s no steam, but a dry heat that is released by the floor and walls (to a height of 5 feet or 1.5 meters on average).
In Morocco, steam rooms were first reserved for men, and then steam rooms for women were born.
For women, the steam room (Hammam) is also regarded as a meeting place (often weekly), as a cafe is for men.
Public steam rooms are in every neighborhood in Morocco, and everyone goes at least once a week. The Moroccan Steam Ritual is still somewhat the same.
If there are several places in the hottest part of the steam room, we rest (sitting or lying) to enjoy the dry heat and sweat. After a few minutes our masseuse will apply the soap all over your body.
This prepares the skin for exfoliation. Using a glove (Kessa), the masseuse removes all dead skin (exfoliation) and then you rinses you with warm water from a bucket of steam with a copper cup (Tassa).
Afterwards, the masseuse starts wrapping you with clay (Rhassoul) mixed with soothing, anti-oxidant, aromatic and medicinal plants.
After a few minutes, a new flushing takes place, followed by a massage with oil of orange blossoms.
The ideal is to continue this session with a steam room massage in our massage room and then relax on the terrace with a little cup of tea.
